About this work

Het Andante e Rondo Ungarese voor fagot en orkest, Op. 35 (J.158), van Carl Maria von Weber werd oorspronkelijk rond 1809 gecomponeerd voor altviool en orkest (Jähns catalogusnummer J.79), misschien voor zijn broer Fritz, en door Weber zelf bewerkt voor fagot in 1813.

Het is een tweedelige compositie met een lyrisch Andante gevolgd door een levendig, dansant Rondo, dat put uit Hongaarse volksmuziek, vandaar de naam “Ungarese” (Hongaars). Vooral het Rondo bevat levendige, speelse en virtuoze passages die het een schitterende showcase voor de fagottist maken.

We weten niet wanneer en of de altvioolversie ooit is uitgevoerd tijdens het leven van Weber. Beide werken werden aan de vergetelheid ontrukt door het werk van Jähns in 1864 (bijna 40 jaar na Webers dood), en de eerste publicatie van de fagotversie was in 1870. Voor zover bekend werd de altvioolversie J.79 pas in 1987 gepubliceerd.

Omdat de twee werken nogal van elkaar verschillen, geeft Synchestra ze apart uit, tot vreugde van zowel fagottisten als altviolisten.
