About this work
The Andante e Rondo Ungarese for bassoon and orchestra, Op. 35 (J.158), by Carl Maria von Weber was originally composed around 1809 for viola and orchestra (Jähns catalogue number J.79), maybe for his brother Fritz, and reworked by Weber himself for bassoon in 1813.
It is a two-part composition with a lyrical Andante followed by a lively, dance-like Rondo, which draws on Hungarian folk music, hence the name “Ungarese” (Hungarian).
The Rondo, in particular, features brisk, playful, and virtuosic passages that make it a brilliant showcase for the bassoonist.
We do not know when and if the viola version has ever been performed during Weber's life.
Both works were recovered from oblivion through Jähns' work in 1864 (almost 40 years after Weber's death), and the first publication of the bassoon version was in 1870.
As far as we know, the viola version J.79 was only published in 1987.
Because the two works are quite different, Synchestra publishes them separately, to the joy of both bassoonists and viola players.
