About this work
Rigoletto is een van de beroemde opera's van Giuseppe Verdi, gecomponeerd in 1851. De opera is gebaseerd op “Le Roi s'amuse”, een controversieel toneelstuk van Victor Hugo, dat na de eerste opvoering in 1832 bij ministerieel besluit voor 50 jaar werd verboden vanwege de politiek gevoelige inhoud (een verhaal over de escapades van koning François I).
Om een verbod door de Oostenrijkse censuur te voorkomen, veranderde Verdi de namen en rollen (geen koning meer) en verplaatste hij de scène van het verhaal naar Mantua. Rigoletto speelt zich af in drie bedrijven en vertelt het tragische verhaal van een gebochelde hofnar, Rigoletto, die de immorele hertog van Mantua dient.
De plot draait om Rigoletto's pogingen om zijn dochter Gilda te beschermen tegen de corrupte invloeden van de hertog, maar zij wordt verliefd op hem. Dit leidt tot een tragische aaneenschakeling van gebeurtenissen waarin verraad, wraak en het lot door elkaar lopen, wat uiteindelijk resulteert in de vroegtijdige dood van Gilda.
Sinds de première in La Fenice in Venetië is Rigoletto alom geprezen en een essentieel werk geworden in de operawereld, bewonderd om zijn meeslepende personages, aangrijpende verhaallijn en tijdloze muziek. Het is een werk dat het publiek blijft boeien met zijn verkenning van menselijke emoties en de gevolgen van macht en corruptie.
Anekdote
Een bekende anekdote over Rigoletto is dat Giuseppe Verdi de beroemde aria “La donna è mobile” geheim hield tot de première van de opera. Hij was bang dat als het van tevoren bekend zou worden gemaakt, de melodie zich te snel zou verspreiden vanwege de aanstekelijke melodie. Verdi had gelijk: de dag na de première neurieden mensen in heel Venetië het deuntje al en het werd meteen een hit.
