About this work
Gianni Schicchi (SC 88), gecomponeerd door Giacomo Puccini, is een eenakter die in 1918 in première ging. Het maakt deel uit van een trio opera's die bekend staan als Il Trittico, waartoe ook Il Tabarro en Suor Angelica behoren. De beroemdste aria uit Gianni Schicchi is O mio babbino caro (o mijn lieve kleine papa), gezongen door het personage Lauretta. Deze aria is een geliefd stuk in het operarepertoire voor sopranen, vaak uitgevoerd buiten de context van de volledige opera.
De opera zelf is een komedie, wat enigszins uniek is in Puccini's repertoire, aangezien hij beter bekend staat om zijn dramatische en tragische werken. Het verhaal is gebaseerd op een incident dat genoemd wordt in Dante's Goddelijke Komedie (specifiek in de Inferno). Het draait om Gianni Schicchi, een sluwe man die een hebzuchtige familie te slim af is terwijl zij een testament in hun voordeel proberen te manipuleren.
