About this work
Gianni Schicchi (SC 88), composed by Giacomo Puccini, is a one-act opera that premiered in 1918. It is part of a trio of operas known as Il Trittico, which also includes Il Tabarro and Suor Angelica.
The most famous aria from Gianni Schicchi is O mio babbino caro (o my dear little papa), sung by the character Lauretta. This aria is a beloved pieces in the opera repertoire for sopranos, often performed outside the context of the full opera.
The opera itself is a comedy, which is somewhat unique in Puccini's catalogue, as he is better known for his dramatic and tragic works.
The story is based on an incident mentioned in Dante's Divine Comedy (specifically in the Inferno).
It revolves around Gianni Schicchi, a cunning man who outsmarts a greedy family trying to manipulate a will for their benefit.
In O mio babbino caro, Lauretta pleads with her father, Gianni Schicchi, asking him to help her marry the man she loves, Rinuccio.
The tender, heartfelt melody stands in contrast to the comic and often farcical tone of the opera, which adds to its emotional depth.
