About this work
Turandot is the final opera by Giacomo Puccini, left unfinished at the time of his death in 1924 and later completed by composer Franco Alfano.
The opera premiered in 1926 at La Scala, Milan, under the direction of Arturo Toscanini. Set in ancient China, Turandot tells the story of the cold and merciless Princess Turandot, who challenges her suitors with three riddles, having executed those who fail to answer correctly.
The opera’s score is a rich blend of traditional Italian operatic style with Asian musical elements, creating an exotic and dramatic atmosphere.
One of the most famous moments in the opera is the aria Nessun dorma (None Shall Sleep), sung by Calaf in the third act.
Calaf, a mysterious prince who has fallen in love with Turandot, has successfully answered her riddles.
The aria expresses his unwavering belief that he will win her heart despite her coldness, and is renowned for its emotional intensity and climactic high notes, ending with the triumphant exclamation "Vincerò!" (I will win!).
Anecdote
An engaging anecdote from the opera's history is that at its premiere, when the performance reached the point where Puccini had stopped composing, Toscanini laid down his baton and addressed the audience, saying, "Here the Maestro laid down his pen," marking a poignant tribute to the late composer before concluding with Alfano's completion in subsequent performances.
The aria "Nessun dorma" has since transcended the opera world, becoming a powerful symbol of victory and perseverance in popular culture.
