About this work
La calunnia è un venticello ("Slander is a breeze") is a well-known aria from Gioachino Rossini’s opera Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville), which premiered in 1816.
As one of the most iconic works in the comic opera genre, this aria is sung in Act 1 by Don Basilio, a crafty music teacher. In the piece, Don Basilio explains how slander, like a gentle breeze (“venticello”), starts quietly but soon grows into a powerful force capable of destroying reputations.
He suggests to Dr. Bartolo that spreading rumours about Count Almaviva, the opera’s hero, would be an effective way to keep him away from Rosina, whom both men are plotting to control.
The aria is also admired for its musical brilliance.
It begins with a soft, creeping melody that represents the subtle way slander starts.
As the aria continues, the intensity builds, reflecting how the rumour escalates into a full-scale scandal.
Rossini’s clever use of this gradual musical build-up not only highlights the destructive nature of slander but also adds a comedic element, making the aria a standout moment in the opera.
Anecdote
When Il Barbiere di Siviglia was first performed in Rome in 1816, it was met with hostility from the audience, largely due to supporters of Rossini's rival composer, Giovanni Paisiello, who had written an earlier version of The Barber of Seville.
However, by the second performance, the opera was a triumph, and it has remained a favourite in the opera repertory ever since.
