About this work

L'amour est un oiseau rebelle, also known as the Habanera (in English: Love is a rebellious bird), is an iconic aria from Georges Bizet's opera Carmen. Premiered in 1875, Carmen tells the story of a passionate, free spirited gypsy and her tragic relationship with Don José.

Despite its now celebrated status, the opera's debut was met with lukewarm reception, but over time, it has become a beloved works in the operatic repertoire.

In this famous aria, Carmen makes her unforgettable entrance, singing about the unpredictable and uncontrollable nature of love, comparing it to a rebellious bird that no one can tame.
The seductive, wild rhythm of the Habanera adds an exotic flair, drawing on Cuban musical influences that Bizet had unknowingly incorporated from a Spanish Basque song by Sebastián Yradier.

Ironically, the melody that Bizet thought was Spanish had possibly Cuban influences (Yradier visited Cuba in 1857).
The Habanera perfectly reflects Carmen’s untameable spirit and has become a recognizable and celebrated work in classical music, captivating audiences worldwide, even those unfamiliar with opera.

Anecdote

An interesting anecdote about Carmen is that when it premiered in 1875, it was poorly received and considered scandalous.
Bizet was deeply upset by the harsh criticism and tragically died just three months later, never witnessing its eventual success.

Today, Carmen has become a very popular opera, proving that masterpieces often take time to be fully appreciated.

Also interesting: although the libretto for the opera was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, the words of the habanera originated from Bizet himself.
