Anecdote
Sibelius originally intended his Violin Concerto to be premiered by the renowned violinist Willy Burmester, but due to scheduling conflicts, a lesser-known soloist, Viktor Nováček, performed it in 1904.
The poorly prepared premiere was a disaster, prompting Sibelius to revise the concerto, creating the version that is widely performed today.
When it was reintroduced in 1905 under Richard Strauss, it was a success.
Finally, Burmester never performed the work, despite being Sibelius' first choice.
