About this work

Rigoletto is one of Giuseppe Verdi's famous operas, composed in 1851.
The opera is based on "Le Roi s'amuse", a controversial play by Victor Hugo, which was banned by ministerial decree for 50 years after its first performance in 1832 due to its politically sensitive content (a story about the escapades of King François I).

To avoid a ban by the Austrian censorship, Verdi changed the names and roles (no king anymore) and moved the scene of the story to Mantua.
Set in three acts, Rigoletto tells the tragic story of a hunchbacked court jester, Rigoletto, who serves the immoral Duke of Mantua.

The plot revolves around Rigoletto's efforts to protect his daughter, Gilda, from the corrupt influences of the Duke, only for her to fall in love with him.
This leads to a tragic chain of events where betrayal, vengeance, and fate intertwine, ultimately resulting in Gilda’s untimely death.

Since its premiere at La Fenice in Venice, Rigoletto has gained widespread acclaim and become an essential work in the world of opera, admired for its compelling characters, gripping storyline, and timeless music.
It is a work that continues to captivate audiences with its exploration of human emotion and the consequences of power and corruption.

Anecdote

A well-known anecdote about Rigoletto is that Giuseppe Verdi kept the famous aria "La donna è mobile" a secret until the opera's premiere.
He feared that if it were revealed beforehand, the tune would spread too quickly because of its catchy melody.
Verdi was right—by the day after the premiere, people all over Venice were already humming the tune, and it became an instant hit.
